Rep. Bishop: Sandy shoreline fix should go beyond mere restoration

Rep. Tim Bishop

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Tim Bishop said Tuesday that it makes little sense to simply restore Long Island's shoreline to its condition before superstorm Sandy -- instead of fortifying it for future storms.

Take Tiana Beach, badly eroded by the storm. There's a federal-state effort to add sand, the Southampton Democrat said, but not to fix it to withstand another storm like Sandy.

"To restore it to pre-storm condition continues to leave it very vulnerable to a breach," Bishop said. "Aren't we then, in effect, just throwing good money after bad?"

But that's what two federal laws now require, Bishop said, adding he will try to change them by attaching a measure to the White House funding request for Sandy...| read more ››

POLL: Krupski or Walter - Who Do You Want to See on the County Legislature?

Nov

2012

Earlier this month, longtime Southold Town Councilman Al Krupski announced to members of his local Democratic party that he is running for a seat on the Suffolk County Legislature, a seat recently left empty by Ed Romaine, who won the race for Brookhaven Town Supervisor on Election Night.

And after weeks of speculation on who would be the GOP candidate to face Krupski in the race, Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter announced this week that he earned the nod as the Republican nominee for the First Legislative District seat.

With his eight years of experience on the Southold Town Board and a lifetime of farming on the North Fork, Krupski said he believes he’s seasoned enough to spread his wings and...| read more ››

Editorial: Election will heat up the North Fork

Nov

2012

Thanksgiving is in the past and Christmas and Hanukkah are in the near future, so why are local politicos charged up these days?

It’s simple: There’s a one-of-a-kind election coming in January to fill the county Legislature seat Ed Romaine left following his election last month as Brookhaven’s new town supervisor.

The election is one-of-a-kind in more than just the unusual timing. It appears that Southold Democratic Councilman Al Krupski will go head to head with Riverhead Republican Supervisor Sean Walter. This may be the first time an elected official from one North Fork town has run against one from the other.

But even before the campaigning begins, there’s a dispute brewing over the election’s timing.

Southold Dem Krupski deemed likely to seek county Leg. seat

Nov

2012

Southold Democratic town board member Al Krupski took an up-close and personal look at how the Suffolk County Legislature operated Friday by attending a meeting of its environment committee.

Krupski is the leading Democratic contender to run for the seat now held by GOP Legis. Edward Romaine, who was elected Brookhaven supervisor earlier this month and will take office once the vote is certified. Krupski has already met with Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, and Schaffer said Krupski -- from a well-established North Fork farming family -- is ready to make the run.

Meanwhile Riverhead’s Republican Supervisor Sean Walter has also expressed interest in Romaine’s seat. Walter, a Wading River lawyer, has been supervisor for three years. Walter’s father Michael...| read more ››

Krupski running for County Legislature

Nov

2012

A week after his name was first mentioned as perhaps the Democrat’s best hope to capture the Suffolk County Legislature seat Ed Romaine is leaving, Al Krupski ended all speculation Tuesday night.

He’s going for it.

Mr. Krupski, a Peconic farmer who has served in elected office in Southold for 28 years, announced his decision during a meeting of the town’s Democratic Committee.

“It’s an exciting opportunity,” said Mr. Krupski, one of only two Democrats in town government. Should he gain the seat, he said, “I’ll still be serving Southold, only in a different capacity.”

The Legislature’s First District includes Southold, Riverhead and part of southeast Brookhaven. Mr. Romaine, a Center Moriches Republican, will leave the Legislature once he’s sworn...| read more ››

Al Krupski Will Run for Seat on Suffolk County Legislature

It’s official — longtime Southold Town Councilman Al Krupski is running on the Democratic ticket for a seat in the Suffolk County Legislature that will soon be left empty by Ed Romaine, who won the race for Brookhaven Town Supervisor last Tuesday.

Krupski announced the move at a meeting of the Southold Town Democratic Committee Tuesday night at the First Universalist Church of Southold.

“It seemed like a good opportunity to serve everyone in Southold and a little more, going in to Riverhead and Brookhaven,” Krupski said.

On Election Night Rich Schaffer, the chairman of the County Democratic Committee who also won big in his bid to complete County Exec Steve Bellone's term as Babylon Town Supervisor, mentioned Krupski as...| read more ››

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said Saturday he is bypassing LIPA's top managers and working directly with local substation coordinators to restore power to Suffolk County residents by Sunday night.

"We are taking matters into our own hands here," said Bellone at a 2 p.m. news conference in the parking lot at the LIPA / National Grid office in Brentwood.

He blasted the home inspection process LIPA implemented five days after the height of superstorm Sandy.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer also spoke about his efforts in negotiating with LIPA attorneys over restoring power to the homes south of Montauk Highway that were without serious structural damage.

Bellone also asked residents not to take their frustrations out on individual...| read more ››

Krupski, Russell, Faulk, Densieski for Legislature?

Scott Russell vs. Al Krupski?

County Legislator Ed Densieski?

Faulk for Legislature?

These are some of the names being bounced around by party leaders to replace County Legislator Ed Romaine, who won a special election Tuesday for Brookhaven Town Supervisor.

Mr. Krupski was the only potential candidate named Tuesday night by Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer. He said Wednesday that he’s interested, but he can’t commit to running in a special election just yet.

“I can’t say yes but I’m not saying no,” said Mr. Krupski, the only Democrat to hold a Town Board post in Mr. Romaine’s district. “I’m going to talk about it with Rich and then talk about it with my family. I certainly know the district...| read more ››

Representative Tim Bishop welcomed the endorsement of Governor Andrew Cuomo today.

Governor Cuomo said Representative Bishop’s record makes the case for his re-election.

"I am proud to endorse Tim Bishop for Reelection to the House of Representatives. Tim is a true advocate for Eastern Long Island and all New Yorkers. From fighting for clean air and clean water to fighting to keep jobs in our state at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Gabreski Airport, Tim has shown time and again that he has what it takes to represent our interests in Congress. In short, Tim delivers for us and for Eastern Long Island and that's why it is so important to send him back to Congress."
