Thomas Schiliro has never stopped looking for a new challenge, and a new way to serve the community. The 62-year-old, who lives in Manorville, has been a social studies teacher and a college professor. For the past two decades, he's been a Suffolk County parks police officer, and he's been politically active for most of his life.

Now, the Democrat wants to go to Albany to fight for Long Island. It doesn't seem like there will be much of a learning curve.| read more ››

Tom Schiliro, candidate for the 2nd Assembly District, has been endorsed by the League of Humane Voters, which recognizes that Schiliro has displayed an express commitment to supporting animal protections through his advocacy for the Consolidated Animal Crimes Bill and his commitment to advocating for animals across all species.

“As a police officer, I have seen too many innocent animals mistreated with no one to defend them. It’s time to give them a voice,” said Schiliro. “In the Assembly, I will support the Consolidated Animal Crimes Bill to protect our pets and all animals.”

The Consolidated Animal Crimes Bill would strengthen penalties for animal abuse because no animal should have to suffer. Additionally, it would empower local and state police...| read more ››

Riverhead – Assembly candidate Tom Schiliro won his debate last night against Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo in their race for the 2nd Assembly District seat. “It is evident that Mr. Palumbo and I do not agree on several vital issues that affect the community, with women’s equality being the most essential. It is preposterous that he blames Democrats for holding up the Women’s Equality Bill when he’s the one who voted against it,” stated Schiliro. “I will remain steadfast on supporting all 10 Points of the Women’s Equality Act, ensuring that a woman retains her right to choose.”

ROCKY POINT – momentum is building behind Tom Schiliro’s (D-Manorville) campaign for New York State Assembly in the 2nd District. He was recently endorsed by several prominent pro-labor groups and local unions.

We also need to improve our business climate to help spur economic growth here on Long Island. I’m honored that these labor groups believe I am the right person to accomplish these goals.”

Schiliro has earned the support of 1199 Service Employees International Union (1199 SEIU), Local 338 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), Local 1104 Communications...| read more ››

Property Taxes and the Need for Immediate Relief

Jul

2014

ROCKY POINT - The property tax is the most regressive tax ever imposed upon our citizens. It is not based on income, ability to pay, or any other fair and equitable system. It is based on the common necessity of home ownership; a basic right to the American dream. The tax is imposed by arbitrary standards such as assessments, location, and equalization rates that quite frankly make no sense, and home values.| read more ››

Celebrating the Life of Otis G. Pike

As Suffolk Democrats, we owe a great deal to the legacy of Congressman Otis G. Pike. He was a trailblazer for us for many years.

To this day, I think that we all can identify with him when he once said: “I’ve always said I’m surrounded on three sides by water and on the fourth by Republicans.”

His legacy of public service will not be lost on us. He was a decorated Marine pilot in WWII, a Riverhead Town Councilman and Justice and served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years, where he fought tirelessly for the environment and our quality of life here in Suffolk County.

Congressman Pike passed away earlier this year in Florida at the...| read more ››

At a recent veterans appreciation ceremony, Suffolk County honored veterans for their accomplishments and others who have supported former military personnel after their return home.

“Every single soldier deserves our undying respect,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “We honor individuals, many of whom have served our country in uniform, and some non-veterans as well, but all have dedicated themselves to serving our returning veterans. These are people who have stepped up and gone above and beyond to serve our veterans; they’re doing God’s work in their service.”

Among those honored were John Sehejong Ha of Plainview, a veteran of the Korean War and second vice president of the Korean War Veterans Central Long Island Chapter. He was honored for...| read more ››
